Red Robin Opened Today

by Steve
9/24/2008 01:40:00 PM

The Red Robin restaurant in the Countryside Marketplace, opened for the first time today, as a soft-opening, serving only invited guests. The soft opening continues through Sunday, with the grand opening on Monday.

The company sent invitations out to various folks in Menifee. I'm not sure how they chose whom to send invitations to, but mine was addressed to my corporate name "Clear Digital Media".

The place was pretty packed in. Looking at the kitchen area, they must have had 15-20 people working back there. The restaurant has 60 servers hired, broken out into 14 teams, including a bevy of trainers.

As part of the soft opening, food was free. The purpose of the invitations was to give their staff five days of live training. In exchange, customers were advised that there could be delays while trainers gave out instructions, along with the expected mistakes and glitches. But I found that our service went along just fine. And the food was pretty much on par with what I've found at the Red Robin in Temecula. And you still get the bottomless-fries.

A NEW CLUB IS FORMED

Date-:2008-09-15. Time-:11:05:34.

The Sun City Model Railroad Club allows members to continue their childhood love of model trains.

Ralph Stenlake, president of the group, said he still has the 1937 Lionel 1750 - 249E train set given to him when he was 9 months old.

"My dad played with the train set before it was given to me," Stenlake said.

Members of the newly formed Sun City Model Railroad Club include, from left, President Ralph Stenlake, Chuck Reutter, Bill Hammond, John Hutchins and Allen Perry.

The club was the idea of Chuck Reutter, who approached the board of the Sun City Civic Association in June.

Members who want to join must live in what is called the core area of Sun City, but guests are welcome anytime.

"The purpose of the club is to promote model railroading, and I think the club has a good future here. It is good for the community," Reutter said.

"We just wanted to get the club off the ground and five to six persons responded to the notice" in the Sun City Civic Association newsletter, Reutter said.

"Once we get established, we will have train shows at the local mall or here in the association's clubhouse," Stenlake said.

Model railroaders will tell you that it is a family-oriented hobby usually started in childhood but continuing on through a lifetime.

Basic train sets average from $150 to $200 and can be purchased at hobby stores, from mail order houses or on the Internet. But the hobby can become time consuming and expensive.

Vice President Allen Perry said he is interested in live steam trains. He is building one that he expects to finish next summer.

"I build every part and it will have taken me four years to build at a cost of $25,000," he said.

Treasurer Reutter recalls receiving a train as a Christmas present from his parents in 1948. Interest in trains runs in his family, he said.

"My niece is a train engineer for Amtrak in Connecticut," Reutter said.

Bill Hammond, secretary of the club, builds garden model railroads. "My goal will be to have members and guests come to my home and run the trains," he said.

The club meets the first Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. in the West room of Del Webb Hall, 26850 Sun City Blvd., Sun City.

VOLUNTEERS!

The Sunshine Club is always looking for volunteers who want to put a smile on a lonely senior's face. Sunshine Club volunteers make at least one weekly visit to an identified senior who needs some human contact and tender attention. There are many seniors living alone or in a care facility who have no local family and need to "make regular contact with the outside world". Interested in being a Sunshine Club volunteer? Stop Means Stop

by Menifee Tina
9/05/2008 03:26:00 PM

On my travels in and around Menifee, I pass through the intersection at Menifee Road and Holland Road quite often. As a strange phenomenon, I have noticed that many motorists seem to be unaware that this is a 4-way stop, even though it is clearly marked. What I mean is, that many, many of them just glide on through without stopping.
I have been at this intersection at all different times of day to witness this. But to be certain that it wasn’t just something I see, I talked with some of the sign twirlers who work on this corner. They have conveyed to me that 1 out of every 5 cars stop, at best. And most of those “stops” are the infamous “California Rolling Stop”.
This intersection is right in between 2 elementary schools and one middle school. I see children here quite often. How is it that these motorists can be in such a hurry, and be so careless?
The day that frustrated me most was the day that I saw a school bus stopped not far from the corner, with it’s stop sign blinking and red lights flashing. I watched car after car breeze through the intersection, and then continue on to pass the school bus! The stop sign that extends out from the side of the bus was flashing, and yet one motorist after another ignored this, and went right on by.
C’mon folks. Where are you going that you cannot stop at a 4-way stop? Or better yet, for a school bus with children disembarking? There must be other intersections in Menifee where this is happening, I am certain. Now, I know you, the reader, would never do this, so please, to your neighbor, pass it on. . . STOP MEANS STOP!

Sun City Disaster Services has installed a community emergency phone line at the Kay Ceniceros Center.  In the event of a local emergency, it will provide updated recorded informational messages.  It will be another way for you to get local disaster/emergency information.  The Disaster Non-Emergency Information Line number is 1-866-719-9770 (toll-free).  Remember, this phone line provides taped messages only.  It does NOT allow you to talk to a live person or to leave a message.

Which Came First: Sun City or Menifee?

Here's an interesting quote from the Press Enterprise today, regarding some folks in Sun City trying to stop the cityhood effort...
Another worry voiced at the meeting was that Sun City could lose its identity and history once cloaked with the name Menifee or Menifee Valley.

"Sun City was started in the '60s," Pica said. "They want to destroy that. They say, 'Oh you'll remember who you are,' but my grandkids and my great-grandkids won't."
The truth is that it was all named "Menifee" long before there was a Sun City.
